The event aims to foster Australian and U.S. business relations and exports in the spirit of innovation for small and medium size enterprises.

The event will be hosted at Tesla, the American innovation giant, at their Martin Place showroom.

U.S. Business, Work and Investment Visas

Country Consular Coordinator Linda Daetwyler will discuss the different types of U.S. business, employment, and investment visas available, with a special emphasis on the uniquely Australian, E3 work visa for Australians in specialty occupations. The United States has long benefited from Australia’s talent pool to fill positions in the U.S. market.  As the exchange of employees, skills, and knowledge between the U.S. and Australia becomes ever more important and beneficial for both nations, the E3 work visa is increasingly used by Australians to facilitate this exchange.

Legal and Tax Issues

Patrick Fazzone, Partner of Montgomery Fazzone, PLLC, a law firm with offices in Washington, D.C. and Sydney, will discuss common legal and tax issues that businesses may confront in setting up operations in the U.S., either through the establishment of a new business or through acquisition. He will touch on his experience negotiating and concluding commercial transactions, intellectual property protection and licensing, and navigating the range of federal, state and local regulatory requirements.

Sourcing export finance for investment in the US – the EFIC option

Leela Hanson, Director Alliances and Advisors with EFIC (Export Finance and Insurance Corporation), Australia’s export credit agency, will discuss how EFIC can assist SME exporters with finance support to fulfil their export contracts and grow their business internationally. There will be discussion on how to best access surety bonds.

Amy Frey is President and Founder of ATC International LLC, a US-based third party warehouse that specializes in working with Australian consumer product companies.   She will discuss tips for using third party warehousing as a business model for US market entry and Amy will also touch upon her experience working with many companies new to the US market and how to avoid some of the most common and costly mistakes of initially shipping consumer products to the US.

Visa’s and Immigration

Nikki Dryden is the US Attorney for Fragomen’s Consular Practice team based in our Sydney office. Nikki provides advice and guidance on all aspects of US visa processing in Sydney and across Asia Pacific, from E-3 visas to more complex issues such as waivers of inadmissibility (based on unlawful presence, misrepresentations, crimes involving moral turpitude). Nikki will discuss how the US Consular team at Fragomen can assist with exploring different pathways to get your employees to the US, assess an applicant’s eligibility, and identify possible immigration complexities. She will explain how working with an Attorney and an experienced team can be invaluable in preparing applicants on current procedures to obtain visas at US consular posts, including scheduling consular interviews, requesting an expedited appointment, completing required forms, collecting appropriate supporting documentation, and preparing applicants for consular interviews.

Ian Smith is the Founder and CEO of CargoHound, the Uber of international freight. He will discuss how companies can reduce the time, cost and risk of shipping products to the United States. Ian is a former Australian Trade Commissioner for the Midwest region of the US and also founded United States Connect that provides a one-stop-shop for companies to access the information, advice and contacts they need to succeed in the States.

Australian Trusted Trader Program

Meg Reid is the Director of Australian Trusted Trader Headquarters Section within the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) and is responsible for the delivery of the Australian Trusted Trader programme. Within DIBP, Ms Reid previously held positions as Assistant Director, Irregular Migration Policy, responsible for people smuggling policy and third country resettlement options under Operation Sovereign Borders; Assistant Director, Middle East and Sri Lanka; and Assistant Director, Joint Agency Task Force. Ms Reid has previously held positions in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Prior to public service, Ms Reid was engaged in the private sector, working in crisis and project management at Societe General, Lloyds TSB, Anglo Irish Bank and BP International in London. Ms Reid holds a Bachelor of Economics, a Bachelor of Communications and a Graduate Diploma in International Relations. Ms Reid has travelled extensively and has lived in London, Los Angeles and Cairo.
